Dog Licenses

Let’s talk about DOG LICENSES, which are on sale from now until January 31! Do you know why you need them? Do you know the benefits you and your dogs get when you license them? Here you go:

  • Dogs with a current-year license are held at the shelter for 14 days for their owner to reclaim instead of the minimum stray hold of just three days.
  • Having your dog licensed is the fastest way to be reunited with your dog if he/she goes missing and ends up in a shelter.
  • A one-year license costs just $20. Three-year: $60. A permanent license – a smart purchase if your dog is young – costs $200.
  • Ohio law requires all owners to license their dogs that are three months and older, or face penalties and possible citations.
  • Fees from dog licenses go directly to the operation of the shelter and our animal control efforts in Cuyahoga County.
  • Update your information! Just like with your driver’s license, if you move or change your phone number, call the shelter (216-525-7877) and we can update your information — yet another way to ensure you are reunited with your dogs if they go missing.
  • If you wait until after January 31, 2026 to buy a license, it comes with a penalty fee – double the amount of the license. · Questions? Email us at doglicense@cuyahogacounty.gov.
